GearMay 2024 – ISSUE #85

Outdoor swimming shouldn’t need much kit. In fact, if you find somewhere remote enough you don’t need to wear anything at all! But some kit can be useful for safety – like a tow float – or for the type of swimming we want to do – like a wetsuit.

In this month’s bumper issue we have 16 pages of gear reviews. Our team has tested swimsuits, two-pieces, jammers, trunks and shorts, wetsuits and shorties. We have worked with brands to try out the newest pieces and products so you can enter the open water season with the best kit for your swimming.

Elsewhere in the magazine we learn about subjects as diverse as meteorology, Channel Grease and the history of the swimsuit. Here are editor Ella Foote’s highlights of the new issue.

  • Did you know there are five different types of fog? Meet Matt Gaw, author of In All Weathers, and discover how there is more than just good or bad weather
  • “Help! I don’t understand training jargon and training plans make no sense to me.” Olympic open water swimmer Cassie Patten explains how to build up distance and increase fitness.
  • Fitting all the swims you want to do in the summer can be a challenge. Find out how to effectively plan ahead to make the most of summer swimming season
  • Rowan Clarke takes a behind-the-scenes glimpse at your swim kit, from its history to how modern brands are responding to the differing needs of swimmers
  • Do you baste yourself with lanolin and petroleum jelly before a swim? Award-winning swimming journalist Elaine Howley gives us a short history of Channel Grease
  • Breaking down barriers: essential kit for disabled swimmers
  • Kit use and maintenance: How not to be an “all the gear and no idea” swimmer
  • Learn how to swim in challenging conditions with confidence
  • Travel: Wye Valley, Ireland, Snowdonia and the Nevis to St Kitts Cross Channel Swim

Plus all the regulars, including health news, outdoor swimming news, training, swim locations, technique, travel, event listings, gear news, and kit reviews.
